While the Spynal Records imprint is best known for a diverse array of drum-n-bass menu items, its hip hop offerings continue to raise the bar, pun intended. Its latest offering in this sector comes courtesy of Donnie Danko, and his aptly named "No Smoke Without Fire" EP. If you like your music on the blunted end of the spectrum, Donnie's got ya covered.

He comes out the box with "Inner City Hippie", a hazy, trippy afternoon walk unpinned by a heavy snare and floated over Donnie's no-worries lyrical delivery while "Let Me Burn One" jaunts across a discordant piano punctuated by hand claps and some tasty turntable chops.

Label head Diligent Fingers manned the buttons on Donnie's ode to daily smoke, "E.S.S.R.', with electric piano chords and trumpet licks laying down an easy going shuffle. Finally, "G Like Anis" skips along with Japanese koto, flute, and handclaps holding up Donnie's most vitriolic flow on the EP.

That said, Mr. Danko's entire verbal demeanor is familiar, almost reassuring. He sounds like that one stoner dude that everyone knows...funny, laid back, but super deep. He might crack some jokes, drop a rhyme, or lazily croon a little tune, and has no problem chatting for hours at the back of the house party while Tribe Called Quest, Children of Zeus, and Digable Planets ooze out of the speakers. So, pop on your headphones and lay back, because Donnie Danko's the chill tour guide you didn't even know you needed.
