Spynal Records has entered its renaissance era. Since Diligent Fingers revived the Manchester label five years ago, it has served as a platform to showcase his eclectic musical tendencies, whether it be his own music or that of other artists he admires. Fast forward to Dili’s last two albums, “War in Peace” and “The War Within”, however, and the label is bristling with a newfound energy. “Dili and Friends”, the new Spynal mixtape showcasing the label’s now-packed roster of talent, is a bellwether for where that new spark is taking the imprint’s listeners into the future.
On “Safe G”, Dili gets grimy on top of a lilting Dusty Flyn beat for a tidy intro to the release. Hidden Prophets, the trio of Dili, Big Gen, and Man.Lyk.Ess, make the first of four appearances on the tape with with “King of the Hill”, a juicy garage ride over a lovely Fender Rhodes.
On “15 Minutes”, Dili’s on the buttons (big up T-Bone!) and Conduit brings the bars on this piano driven drum-n-bass stepper.
“Living In a Lie” is an eerie hip hop creeper courtesy of Hidden Prophets with J Maina providing the bookend vocals " Get Out My Bubble", while Migraine Mowgli and Big Gen bring the rhymes over Dili’s beat and hook on “Goes Around”.
Louis Unseen steps up with a liquidy number under Dili’s patented harmonized crooning on “Could Have Been Us”. Not to be outdone, Dili flexes those fingers on his 140 instrumental “Everlight”.
On “Sat Here”, Ronin OTB maintains that tempo with a hazy, lazy trumpet vibe featuring Hidden Prophets, Migraine Mowgli, Bootleg Kid, and songstress Anya Samadhi.
“Get the Party Started” gets even more blunted with Joe Smoke and Zeekz bringing the verses. And wrapping up the whole tape is a classic hip hop posse cut with Dili doing triple duty on the opening verse, the hook, and production alongside Anya Samadhi. Along for the ride is Hidden Prophets, Migraine Mowgli, Millz N Smoke, Bootleg Kid, and Zeekz (whew!)
As a sampler platter for Spynal’s buffet of artists, “Dili and Friends” is a mighty tasty promise of things to come. The mixtape has shades of those classic movie soundtracks of the 90’s, and there is truly something here for every taste. Forward ever. Backward never. Diligent Fingers has spoken.
